What is a dildo?
Dildos are the oldest sex toys around, but they’ve undergone an incredible transformation over the years. Most of the time, dildos imitate the shape and size of a real penis. However, in addition to realistic dildos, you can now find plenty of non-realistic and non-phallic dildo shapes too, including fantasy-inspired dragon dildos or monster dildos.
Although dildos have long been thought of as a sex toy for people with vaginas, absolutely anyone can enjoy dildos on their own or with a partner(s). Dildos can be inserted either vaginally or anally – just make sure to use a dildo with a wide, flared base if you’re using it anally and always clean it between uses, especially if you like to use it both ways or with partners.
How to choose a dildo
Dildo designs have come a long way over the years, greatly developed from the sex toys of history which included a 28,000 year old dildo made of stone and camel dung. Luckily, the materials are vastly different now, with a focus on pleasure and hygiene. Silicone is the go-to thanks to its lifelike texture and ease of cleaning, but glass dildos and metal dildos have become popular in recent years due to their cooling and heating properties – ideal for temperature play – and they’re also incredibly easy to clean.
If you’re just beginning to explore the world of dildos, then opt for a simple, slimline one to ease in. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can start to experiment with others, such as large dildos or double penetrating dildos.
What are the different types of dildos?
Can’t decide what to go for? Here’s a quick introduction to the wonderful and varied world of dildos to help you choose your new favourite toy:
Realistic dildos
These are designed to imitate the real size, shape, appearance and feeling of a penis, complete with veins and different skin tones. Realistic dildos can also come with balls if you want to keep things as real as possible.
Non-phallic dildos
The beauty of dildos is that they can look and feel however you want – you don’t just have to stick to what’s possible in the real world. So, if you want a brightly coloured dildo that’s totally smooth or has bumps in just the right places, you can get exactly what you’re looking for with non-phallic dildos.
Fantasy dildos
Along the same lines, you can stay away from the real world and indulge your fantasies with totally unrealistic dildos based on creatures like dragons or unicorns.
Anal dildos
To ease into anal penetration, you can pick dildos that are designed specifically for the back door. Anal dildos tend to have a narrower end for easier insertion and a flared base to prevent mishaps, and they can also feature an anal bead design for maximum stimulation.
Strap-on dildos
For hands-free fun, you can opt for strap-on dildos to penetrate your partner. These dildos are secured in place with a strap-on harness – perfect for lesbian couples or straight and bisexual couples interested in pegging.
Suction cup dildos
For hands-free fun on your own, check out our range of suction cup dildos, which you can easily adhere to a flat surface during self-love sessions.
Double-ended dildos
Double-ended dildos or double penetrators are extra long, curved dildos that feature two penises. Enjoy together with a partner or amp up your solo satisfaction with double penetration.
Large dildos
We’d recommend that beginners start with small dildos, but if you’re ready to level up your pleasure game, you can find plenty of large and extra large dildos to enjoy either alone or with company.
Vibrating dildos
Whilst most dildos don’t vibrate, you can find vibrating ones if you’d like to combine the pleasuring power of a dildo and a vibrator. Get two toys in one!
Inflatable dildos
To achieve the desired sensation of fullness, you can choose inflatable dildos that will inflate to your chosen size when inserted thanks to the accompanying pump.
Ejaculating dildos
Want an even more realistic experience? Ejaculating dildos can squirt on demand to deliver enhanced, realistic sensations.
How to use a dildo
That’s what’s so wonderful about dildos; there are so many ways they can be enjoyed. Don’t just keep all the fun to yourself. Of course, they can be used for solo play, and are particularly thrilling when coupled with a bullet vibrator or anal sex toys for double – or triple – the fun.
With a partner, you can use a strap-on dildo or even a double-ended dildo – both perfect for playing with any and all genders. Use them vaginally or anally – just make sure you’re using plenty of water-based lube – giving you a chance to experiment with double penetration without having to enlist a (real) third member. Whether you’re riding solo or with someone else, you’re guaranteed to enjoy.
